store austabotntind
This is one of the most well known tops in both Hurrungane and Jotunheimen. The trip is not that especially technically challenging, however it has it’s steep parts and it is necessary to use ropes, at least for the last part of the journey at the top.
From Turtagrø you should drive the first part of the trip of towards Berdalsbandet. This is situated on the road on the way to Øvre Årdal. The first ascent from the car is relatively easy terrain until the beginning of the ridge at about 1800 meters. From here it is relatively easy to Vesttoppen (as described on the journey to Austabotntind in the previous section).
From here one has to secure oneself with rope and two ropelengths for the descent onto the snow patch. Thereafter follow a ridge for two more rope-lengths; do this round the right side along the ledge formations. A broad ravine then leads up to an opening on the ridge, this takes two rope-lengths. Next, use one rope length along the ridge and then two more rope-lengths on over to the snowpatch to the opening between the two left foretops. Very alpine top point. From Vestoppen to Store Austabotntind take about 1-3 hours. Return by the sme route. The difficulty-grade here is about 2-3.
